Definition of the evil eye

Seeing something that you like in another, even if you are not jealous of them or feeling less about it. You may somehow impose them with the evil eye and destroy the thing you admired. The evil eye meaning is, it comes from a look of fondness that a person has onto another. The affliction of the victim may disclose as sickness, loss of wealth or family, or a streak of general bad luck.

This does not always happen in every case where someone adores or likes something in another. But this is the most familiar way through which the evil eye affects people.

If you accept the presence of evil eye, it does not mean that you are disbelieving in Allah the almighty. But to save ourselves from the affect of the evil eye, there are some Duaa that one should recite from the Qur’an and Sunnah.

Dua for evil eye protection

These Duaa are given to us for evil eye protection. Except for the last one, they are not the solution for someone who has already been afflicted with the evil eye. Because after someone has already been affected that will involve a long process of making the Ruqya dua in an attempt to cure the distressed

  • Praising another person

Good things happen to everyone and it is great to be happy for others, or yourself. So, whenever we see something that we like or enjoy in a person or ourselves, it is encouraged for us to say ‘Maasha’a Allah, ‘Allahumma Barik’, ‘tabarakAllah’ to protect everyone against the evil eye.

These phrases are meant to thank and glorify Allah (Swt) as He is the creator of that creation which you admire and they ask for the blessings of Allah (Swt) on you or the person that you are admiring.

Once a companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took off his clothes to take a shower and another companion made a comment on his beautiful body. The first companion who had to take a shower instantly fell ill. Upon inquiring the Holy Prophet, he said, ‘Why does one of you kill his brother? Why didn’t you say, ‘May Allah bless you?’ (ta Baraka-Lah) The evil eye is real. Do wudu from it.’ (Muwatta Malik)

  •  Suras Falaq, & Nas (Qur’an 113 & 114)

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to look for security against the evil of jinn and the evil eyes till Al-Falaq and An-Nas were announced. He took to them for asking Allah’s protection and left everything besides them after their disclosure.

The two Duaas of Falaq and Nas, along with Suratul Ikhlas (Qur’an 112) are our best weapons against the evil eye and any evil that can happen to a person. Our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught everyone to recite these three chapters of the Quran thrice every morning and evening, reciting them will be enough for us in all aspects of our lives.

  • The Prayer of Ibraheem (AS)

‘I ask refuge for you both in the perfect words of Allah, from every devil and every poisonous reptile, and every evil eye’. [Sunan Ibn Majah]

The prayer that Prophet Ibraheem (as) used to pray for his sons. Also our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used to make for his grandchildren, Hassan and Hussein.

If you want to know the dua for children’s protection then this is it, you can also make these Duas for Muslim parents and caregivers. Parents should continue to recite this dua for the children every day even if they are old enough to recite other Duas against the evil eye by themselves.

  • Other Duas

According to our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the greatest means of protection against the evil eye lies in the recitation of the following Duas too:

  • Surah al-Fatiha
  • Ayat ul-Kursi
  • Surah Baqarah
  • Dua of Jibril (AS)

Meaning, ‘In the Name of Allah I perform Ruqyah for you, from everything harmful to you, from the evil of every spirit or jealous eye, may Allah heal you. In the Name of Allah, I will do Ruqyah for you’. [Sunan Ibn Majah]

Angel Jibril (as) performed this dua on Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) when he was ill. This means that this prayer may be working as a healing process for the evil eye, and not necessarily a protection against it.

Signs of the evil eye

Our Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mentioned, ‘The evil eye is real and if anything were to overtake the holy decree, it would be the evil eye.’ [Muslim]

Some evil eye symptoms are given below for you to know about.

May Allah the Almighty protect us from all the envy and evil eye. May Allah bless us with the knowledge and understanding according to the sunnah of our beloved prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Another dua for protection is, ‘I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of that which He has created’. Before discovery of Surah al-FAlaq and An-Naas the prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite this over his grandsons Hassan and Hussain.

What do the Quran and Hadith say about Evil Eye?

As Muslims, to decide whether something is real or superstition, we must turn to the Quran and the recorded practices and beliefs of the Prophet Muhammad (Hadith). The Quran says: ‘And the unbelievers who are bent on declining the truth, would all but kill you with their eyes whenever they hear this message. And they say, ‘Definitely, he [Prophet] is a man possessed!’ [Quran 68:51].

‘Pray, I ask refuge with the Lord of the Dawn, from the mischief of creations, from the mischief of darkness as it overspreads, from the mischief of those who practice secret arts, and from the mischief of the jealous one as he contains jealousy.’ [Quran 113:1-5].

Our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke about the existence of the evil eye and told his followers to recite certain verses of the Quran to protect themselves. The Prophet also criticized followers who adored someone or something without praising Allah, ‘Why would one of you kill his brother? If you see something that you appreciate, then pray for blessings upon him.’

What evil eye can cause?

Many Muslims blame every little thing that goes “wrong” in their lives to the evil eye. There may even be cases when a biological cause, for example, mental illness often mistaken with the evil eye. Then no one seeks any medical treatment or professional advice. Everyone should be careful to understand that there are biological disorders that may cause certain symptoms, and it is obligatory upon everyone to seek medical attention for such health conditions. We should also be aware that when things “go wrong” in our lives, we may be facing a test from Allah, and need to be responsible by responding with reflection and remorse, not blame.

Maybe it is because of the evil eye or another cause, nothing will touch our lives without the Qadr of Allah behind it. We should always have faith in our hearts that everything happens in our lives for a reason. Not become overly obsessed with the possible effects of the evil eye. Overthinking or having paranoia about the evil eye is itself a sickness. It stops us from having positive thoughts about Allah’s plans for us. We shouldn’t let the whisperings of Satan distract us. While we may take measures to help strengthen our faith and protect ourselves from this evil. Allah the Almighty alone can relieve our pain, and we must ask protection only from Him.

Spiritual house protection

Firstly, you need to be grateful for the blessing of Allah, as gratitude is one of the noblest of attitudes. Ibn Al-Qayim mentioned in Madarij al-Salikeen [2/242], faith is of two halves: gratitude and endurance. If a person is grateful to his Creator, He will preserve His blessings to him and complete it, increase it and more.

Allah says, ‘And (remember) when your Lord proclaimed, if you give thanks (by accepting Faith and worshipping none but Allah), I will give you more (of my blessings), but if you are not grateful, (i.e. disbelievers), verily, My punishment is indeed harsh’. [Ibraheem 14:7]

Secondly, make food and invite people to come and eat in your house, for that is a way of showing gratitude to Allah.  It says in al-Mawso’ah al-Fiqhiyah (8/206):

Holding a feast after obtaining ownership is Mustahabb. Like all types of feasts on happy occasions or to ward off evil. It is well-known as Aakeerah. It is not as necessary as the wedding feast. Some of the Shaafa’is mention two opinions as to whether it is essential. After mentioning feasts, al-Shaafa’i said, that includes the Wakeerah, and I do not grant an acknowledgment allowing one to neglect it.

Surah Al-Baqarah

Reciting Surah Al-Baqarah keeps Satan away from the home. Many unhappy situations are satanic (evil eye, possession, black magic). So keeping Satan far away from your home is a basic need for the protection of your family. Abu Hurayrah mentioned that the Messenger of Allah said,

‘Do not make your houses like graves, for the Satan runs away from a house in which one recites Surat al-Baqarah.’ [Muslim, 780]

Also, Sahl ibn Sa’d said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned, ‘Everything has a hump (or, high peak), and Al-Baqarah is the high peak of the Quran. Whoever recites Al-Baqarah at night in his/her house, then Satan will not enter that house for three nights. Whoever recites it during daytime in his/her house, then Satan will not enter that house for three days.’ [Abu Al-Qasim At-Tabarani]

These are some credible ways of the spiritual protection of your family and house.

Conclusion

A person should engage himself/herself in the remembrance of Allah the Almighty. By doing dhikr as much as he/she can during the daytime and the evening, most importantly before going to sleep. To protect a person from the evil that may try to infiltrate his/her armor, Dhikr can be an essence. So, we must try to do Dhikr and use Ruqyah, as mentioned by the beloved Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
