Details

Late 19th Century Syrian chair with arabesque mother-of-pearl and abalone inlays
Syrian, late 19th Century
Dimensions: Height 120cm, width 63cm, depth 50cm

Crafted in the distinctive Syrian style, this beautiful armchair is profusely decorated with Arabesque inlays of abalone shell, mother-of-pearl, and bone. The body of the chair is hardwood, and stands on four square-profile legs. The front two are more decorative, and curve outwards slightly. An ornate seat rail connects them, and is carved in a scalloped foliate cut-out design with geometric inlays. The legs and armrests are similar decorated. The large backrest, however, is the stand out feature of this chair. Similarly to the seat rail, it features a cut out design, with scrolling Arabesque foliate forms, flowers, and geometric patterns. The seat is upholstered in a fine cream coloured brocade fabric, which features some slight wear to the front. This can be professionally repaired or reupholstered accordingly.
