Generally, Zamzam is well-known to Muslims as the “Holy water” in Islam. The water comes out from the well of Zamzam which is located in the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The well we are talking about is just 20 meters away from the Kaaba. Every year millions of Muslim pilgrims visit the well, to perform the Hajj or Umrah, and there the pilgrimages drink Zamzam water. Because they believe that it is a blessed miracle from Allah the Almighty.
The correct measurement of Zamzam well is about 35.5 meters deep and taps groundwater from the wadi alluvium. Water used to get drawn initially by using ropes and buckets. In recent times, the Saudi government built electric pumps to draw the water. It construct is in a way that the water is available throughout Masjid al-Haram via water fountains and allocating containers can be found close to the Tawaf area. Zamzam well is in a basement room where visitors or pilgrimages are not allowed to enter.
History of Zamzam water
The Zamzam well was discovered by the second wife of Ibrahim whose name was Hajar and she was the mother of Ismail (peace and blessings be upon him). It began when Hajar and her infant Ismail were alone and left in the desert between the hills of Safa and Marwah all alone by Ibrahim (peace and blessings be upon him). Following Allah’s commanded Prophet Ibrahim left them there to prove his faith in the Almighty.
When the days got hotter as time went by, Ismail became thirsty and he began to cry. Hajar couldn’t tolerate that her son was suffering. She started going back and forth between the hills of Safa and Marwah seven times looking for someone to assist them for water. On her seventh trip, all of the sudden water came out of the underground near Ismail. The water kept flowing and still is flowing, it is one of the greatest miracles of Allah in the history of Islam. Hajar said: ‘Zome zome’, which means ‘stop flowing’ and thus the water was named Zamzam.
